Admissions: Introduction

The British School Caracas is a friendly, family-oriented school and we enjoy tremendous support from our parents. One of the most important aspects of our school is the way that new students are welcomed into the community. Their classmates and teachers help them to settle in quickly and it is remarkable to see that within a very short period of time new students feel secure, happy and fully involved in the life of the school.

TBSC welcomes applications from families of all nationalities who share the School’s Vision, Mission and Core Values, and believe their children would benefit from our educational programmes. We offer places for students wishing to enrol throughout the academic year. In all cases, an application form must be completed and submitted before further action can be taken.

FAQ

Please find below a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Should you have an additional question, please email: admissions@tbscaracas.com

When can my child join the school?

We welcome new students throughout the school year. If accepted, we are experts at supporting your child/ren in ensuring they adapt and settle in quickly.

What are the lunch arrangements?

In Preschool, children do not have lunch at school, they only have a healthy snack.  They must bring it from home when they come to school. From Kinder onwards they can bring their own lunch from home or arrange it with our lunch provider.

What languages are taught?

As you would expect of a British international school, English is the medium of instruction in all subjects, except Spanish and French. Spanish is taught as a subject from Kindergarten up to Year 6. In Secondary Spanish is mandatory until Year 11; in IB it can be chosen as an elective subject in either Group 1 or Group 2. Depending on the individual student’s linguistic background and in accordance with our Language Policy, Spanish is available as either a first (mother-tongue) or second language.  French is mandatory from Year 7 to Year 9 and optional from Years 10 to 13.

Why must the students wear a school uniform?

In Venezuela the use of school uniforms is mandatory in all schools.

What are your class sizes?

Average class size: 16 pupils, with a maximum class size of 20.

Do you have provision for children with Special Education Needs?

Our dedicated team of educators in our Learning Support Unit (LSU) is committed to inspiring, challenging and stimulating students to confidently take on new endeavors. Furthermore, our English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department provides essential support for students whose first language is not English, helping them master both written and verbal communication. If necessary, during the application process TBSC may ask for additional reports to ensure a student will benefit from our British international education.

What is your sports program like?

Through high-energy training and structured competition, we actively encourage students to push their athletic and personal boundaries. We do not just develop skilled athletes, we build students’ resilience, discipline and determination in order to foster their leadership potential.

What extra-curricular (Enrichment) activities do you offer?

Depending on the child’s age and school stage, TBSC offers a menu of sports, music, debating, drama, robotics, Model United Nations and many more activities. For more information enter [here]

Which music program does the TBSC offer?

Our Primary curriculum is based on the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), supporting the topics studied in class, and is bolstered by explorations in recorder, percussion instruments, ukulele and singing.   Students learn the basics of musical theory and are taught to perform songs in front of an audience as part of various school-events, assemblies, concerts and in extra-curricular clubs.  Our Secondary curriculum focuses towards the IGCSE course, introducing students to a host of new instruments including drumkit, keyboards and guitar.  Students learn: to compose their own music; perform for audiences at school assemblies, special events, concerts and in an annual musical; and to discuss and assess their knowledge of a wide variety of music at progressively deeper levels.  Some instruments (piano, voice, guitar, bass, drumkit) are supported by peripatetic educators who teach students for short lessons during the school day and also host many club activities, giving students a chance to challenge and deepen their performance skills.  The music faculty is a dedicated team of skilled, professional musicians who support their students throughout every stage of their development and encourage them to take on new challenges.

Does the TBSC provide University and College guidance?

We have a trained and experienced University Guidance Counsellor. Our knowledge of the range of application procedures for different systems, including those of the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Spain and The Netherlands is extensive.

We are also a registered SATs centre. Our students go to some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

What are the start and end dates for the calendar?

We follow a Northern Hemisphere school calendar. The school year typically begins during the fourth week of August and concludes in the fourth week of June annually. For all specific dates, please refer to our full academic calendar by clicking [here].

Who inspects, accredits or quality assures TBSC?

What exams do students sit?

Year 10 and Year 11 study for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations. We are the only school in Venezuela which offers the IGCSE.

In Years 12 to 13 the students study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

The dates of the final examinations for Year 11 and Year 13 are determined by Cambridge International Education (CIE) and the International Baccalaureate Organisation respectively.
